COMPARING DIFFERENT PET FOODS

With so many different diets to choose from it is not always easy to find the best one to feed our animals. There are a variety of different diets that vary in quality that are available to you. Unfortunately, looking at the ingredients list will never give you an accurate idea of the quality of the diet.

When looking at the ingredients, you should group them by nutrients (proteins, fats and carbohydrates). Then you need to evaluate the quality of the ingredients (for example, egg is better than soybean).

Always choose a pet food that will be able to offer the following information to you:
  1. THE NUTRIENT COMPOSITION
  2. DIGESTIBILITY TRIALS
  3. URINE PH AND BLOOD TEST
  4. FEEDING TRIALS
The nutrient composition of a diet will tell you the exact quantity of nutrients in the food. This will give you a much clearer idea of the quality of the food than by simply reading the guaranteed analysis which only tells you the minimum or maximum amount of a nutrient.

You should always look for a diet that has gone through feeding and digestibility trials. This is not required when a company sells their food, but any company that is concerned about the quality of their diets will feed it to animals before putting it on the market. Some companies will also test the urine PH and do blood testing on the animals that are fed the diet. All these tests will reassure the consumer that the diet is of superior quality for their pet as opposed to simply meeting their basic needs.
